I am a volcanologist researching Mt Etna, Sicily and Kilauea, Hawaii for my PhD. I want to find out what triggers volcanic eruptions and the different types of activity seen: from lava flows to gassy eruption plumes and explosive lava fountaining. I work with the monitoring systems for the two volcanoes and the products of eruptions.
Understanding volcanoes helps us uncover how the Earth works as a system and also enables us to work on reducing risk from volcanic hazards.
I am a keen science communicator and enjoy making short films about research, fieldwork and science news. My aim is to make science accessible to a wider audience and to make the Earth Sciences in particular a greater focus in the public sphere.
